 Selena Quintanilla Perez (Spanish pronunciation"se'lena kinta'nija'peres -- April 16, 1971 until March 31, 1995) was known by her mononym, Selena, was an American Tejano singer. Her contributions to music and fashion led to her being the "Queen" of Tejano music. Selena is among the most popular Mexican-American entertainers of late 20th century. Billboard magazine placed her third on their list of the "Greatest Latino Artists" based on Latin albums and Latin chart of songs. Media outlets called her the "Tejano Madonna" for her style of clothing. She is also among the most influential Latin music artists of all time . She is believed to have helped propel the Tejano genre into the mainstream market.The youngest of the Quintanilla family, she debuted on the scene of music as part of the group Selena y Los Dinos, which included her elder siblings A.B. Quintanilla and Suzette Quintanilla. In the 80s, she was frequently accused of singing Tejano music which was a male-dominated musical genre. The singer was also denied bookings at Texas venues. After winning the Tejano Music Award in 1987 for Female Vocalist, she gained recognition. She was signed to EMI Latin in 1989 and made her debut album with her own name in the same year. At the time, her brother was her primary music producer as well as songwriter.Selena has released Entre a Mi Mundo (1992) that peaked at number one on the US Billboard Regional Mexican Albums chart for eight consecutive months. Music critics called it"the "breakthrough record" of her career because of its commercial chart-topping success. One of the songs, "Como la Flor" was a smash and was her most-loved tune. Live! (1993) won Best Mexican/American album at the 1994 Grammy Awards, becoming the first female Tejano artist to win this award. Amor Prohibido became one the most sold Latin albums in the United States in 1994. Critically, it was credited with the initiation of Tejano music's first commercial era. It became one of Latin music's most well-known subgenres.
